Looking to jump into videography, photography or just want a starter camera? We will break down which Sony A6000 series camera is right for you!
Here's what is the same across all of the cameras: 11 frames per second shooting, all shoot at 24 MP and they all have a similar form factor (shape) -- the grip does increase on the Sony A6600 due to the use of the longer-lasting FZ-100 battery. Additionally, all cameras are compatible with Sony's PlayMemories app which allows you to transfer images and take photos -- all with you phone!
The Complete Starter - Sony A6000
Type: Mirrorless | Sensor: APS-C | Megapixels: 24.3MP | Lens mount: Sony E | Screen: 3in tilting screen, 921k dots | Viewfinder: EVF, 1.44m dots | AF: Fast Hybrid AF & 179 Phase-Detect Points | Continuous shooting speed: 11fps | Max video resolution: Full HD | User level: Beginner/enthusiast
What may stand out to you: Low Price, viewfinder resolution is lower than the newer models and no 4K video.
If you just want a stills camera, this will do the job. Newer A6000 series models have better processors, better performance in higher ISO ranges, and in body stabilization. Otherwise, the A6000 still has what it takes for stills photography.
The Upgrade from the Starter - Sony A6100
Type: Mirrorless | Sensor: APS-C | Megapixels: 24.3MP | Lens mount: Sony E | Screen: 3in tilting screen, 921k dots | Viewfinder: EVF, 1.44m dots | AF: 4D FOCUS with 425 Phase-Detect Points | Continuous shooting speed: 11fps | Max video resolution: 4K UHD | User level: Beginner/enthusiast What may stand out to you: Affordable price, same viewfinder as A6000, Face/Eye-Autofocus and 4K Video. The screen is no longer a simple 45 degree vario-angle screen -- it has been updated to flip 180 degrees.
This can be seen as a current replacement for the A6000. The improved BIONZ processor brings a higher maximum ISO setting and increase in AF points do stand out as a factor if you wanted to purchase a step above the A6000 series. On top of it all, the is the cherry on top of 'unlimited recording time' (the camera won't stop recording until the battery dies, or the memory card is filled up). For even better post-production editing with your video, we recommend the A6400. For in-body stabilization and an increased battery time -- we recommend the A6600.
The Videographer's Favorite - Sony A6400
Perfect for vlogging, the A6400 brings ultra-fast AF and a flip screen
Type: Mirrorless | Sensor: APS-C | Megapixels: 24.3MP | Lens mount: Sony E | Screen: 3in tilting screen, 921k dots | Viewfinder: EVF, 2.36m dots | AF: 425 Phase- & Contrast-Detect AF Points | Continuous shooting speed: 11fps | Max video resolution: 4K UHD | User level: Enthusiast
What may stand out to you: Comes with S-Log2, S-Log3 and HLG*, an external Mic Input, and the increased viewfinder resolution.
The A6400 is designed specifically for bloggers, vloggers and content creators, with a 180-degree flip-up screen so that you can grab selfies or – more important film yourself presenting to the camera. It also has Sony’s new-generation AF system, with a claimed 0.2sec AF acquisition speed, 425 phase detection AF points. Video is captured at 4K and with Sony’s S-Log2 and S-Log3 log modes, but also with the new HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma) option*. On top of it all, the is the cherry on top of 'unlimited recording time' (the camera won't stop recording until the battery dies, or the memory card is filled up).
* S-Log as defined by Sony: "S-Log is a gamma curve with a wide dynamic range optimized under the assumption that grading will be performed in the post-production process. S-Log3 allows for better reproduction of gradation characteristics in shadows and the mid-tone range than S-Log2. It has characteristics closer to those of scanned film.
S-Log3 is recommended in general. If S-Log3 does not offer sufficient gradation in the mid- to high-luminance range, try S-Log2."
